"This Is The Life" on TheBlackBoxOffice.com

Every hip-hop documentary is important because it shows our culture's growth and impact. When we first learned about this movie, we were excited because we'd actually been to Good Life and seen it's impact. It was like being on New York's 52nd Street in the 40s, when jazz bands were creating something new and had free reign to be creative. At the time Good Life sessions were happening, there was enormous pressure on rappers to be commercial. Good Life proved that you didn't have to give in.… Continue

THE FLY SHOE DIAIRES

In December 2008, I was able to get my hands on a fly pair of black and red

retro air jordans. Now since I grew up in the late 80's & early 90's hip hop

culture, myself along with many other cats in my age group where "sneaker

heads". I can remember getting a fresh new pair and couldn't wait to wear them

to school the next day. That Tradition has followed me from childhood up

until now as a men in my early 30's. Those black and red jordans (with the fat

laces)… Continue

The New, New

A couple of years ago,( in the late 90's) i hated how mainstream hip hop music sound. I despised it, moving away from everything it represented and started to look elsewhere to celebrate the music and culture I've grown to love. That elsewhere was underground hip hop, where the beats were raw and the lyrics were pure. I loved it, it felt as if I was in "92 or 93" all over again. Unfortunately all that glitters is not gold and once again i found myself displeased with the way hip hop(underground… Continue

LA WEEKLY HERALDS " THIS IS THE LIFE"

Ava DuVernay’s documentary "This Is the Life" is so immediately and fully engrossing that it meets its ambitious goals for the viewer — to illuminate a brief, paradoxically undervalued but globally influential L.A.-based music scene while broadening the accepted parameters of hip-hop — and without feeling lectured to. It’s rare that being schooled so deeply is so pleasurable. The Good Life hip-hop scene started in the early ’90s in South-Central… Continue

The Good Life reunion night last at the House of Blues was a smash! Original Goodlifers showed up to the Gala affair as ready as Hip Hop Gets. Pigeon John's stand up performance set the tone for complete hip hop bliss for the true westcoast heads...Ellay Khule with an ultra cool glow stood amongs his peers as a giant. Good Life Runion Show Review by Angel

What a night is all I can say. It took me two days to gather my thoughts! The night started out with my cousin (Rudejade) and me walking down sunset towards the HOB only to hear someone yell out “Freestyle Fellowship mutha fucka!!!” (I was wearing my shirt) so we turn and it’s PEACE (decked out in his Oakland A’s regalia) and Kitts making a left towards the HOB. The night was already off too a good start considering I didn’t think the Galaxy Ranger was going to be there. So we continue walking… Continue
